Lantern Festival
This year preparations for the new
year begin on Feb. 4, and last until
New Years Eve, Feb. 11.
Activities include house cleaning
to sweep away bad luck, pray to
the stove god and reunite with
family on New Years the most
important day of the year.
Food - sugar melons, baked
wheat cakes and a feast of
everyone's favourites are served
on the big night!
Preparations begin on Feb. 23,
and the Lantern Festival is
held on Feb 26.
Activities - start Feb. 12 off with fireworks!
Each day during this time period has a specific "theme",
with its own activities and traditions (too many to name
here!), superstitions and foods eaten.
Food - leftovers from New Years Eve are always a big hit!
Activities - creating lanterns
is an important activity during
the festival. Also try a little
moon-gazing!
Food - Named after the
festival, yuan xiao are
glutinous rice balls often eaten
as dessert.
